Auto insurance is mandatory in the state of Arizona. If you fail to meet the financial responsibilities of operating a motor vehicle in the state, the court will impose a minimum penalty of five hundred dollars for the first violation and suspend your driver license, registration and license plates of the motor vehicle involved for three months. A second violation within thirty-six months the penalty increases to seven hundred fifty dollars and the suspension of the driver license, registration and license plates increases to six months. For three or more violations in a thirty-six months, the penalty increases to a minimum of one thousand dollars and the suspension of your driver license, registration and license plates increases to one year.

New Jersey state law requires a minimum coverage of $15,000 of Bodily Injury Liability per person up to a total of $30,000 for all persons injured in any one accident and $5,000 of Property Damage Liability. This basic level of coverage is often referred to as 15/30/5 coverage. New Jersey state law also requires a minimum Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage of $15,000 per person and up to a total of $30,000 per accident for any bodily injury caused by an uninsured and/or underinsured driver. While these are the state required minimum coverage amounts, this coverage level is probably not sufficient to fully protect you from financial loss or liability if you are at fault in an accident. If you do not have adequate coverage, the law allows an accident victim to take any assets that you may have in order to cover the costs of their damages. Having additional coverage, in excess of the state minimums, could protect you and your assets in the event of a serious accident. The insurance industry, most consumer groups and most agents typically recommend a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person and $300,000 per accident.

New Jersey allows drivers to elect no fault insurance or retain tort rights under a modified no-fault system. Drivers who choose the no-fault plan are unable to sue negligent drivers for non-economic damages and are immune from such law suits themselves. Drivers who choose to retain the right to sue, can sue other drivers who have also chosen to retain their tort rights and in return can be sued. However, if a driver elects the right to sue and you have an accident with a driver who has opted for no-fault they would be unable to sue the no-fault driver.
